Bare Budget is a small household budgeting app. It is built and run by one person for their own family and a handful of invited people. It has no advertising, no analytics, no tracking of any kind, and nothing about you is ever sold or shared for marketing.

What the app stores

• Your email address and password. Used only to sign you in. Passwords are hashed by the authentication provider and are never visible to anyone, including the app's developer.
• A display name, if you choose to set one, so other members of your household can tell who logged what.
• Your transactions — amount, date, category, an optional description, and whether the entry was typed or spoken.
• Your household — its name, who belongs to it, and any invite codes you generate.
• A notification token for your device, if you leave household alerts switched on. It is issued by Apple, identifies this installation of the app rather than you or your phone, and exists so alerts can be delivered to the right device. Turning the alerts off deletes it.

That is the complete list. The app does not request or receive your contacts, photos, location, calendar, or health data, and it does not use any advertising identifier.

Who can see your data

Only the people in your household. This is enforced in the database itself, so a request for another household's data returns nothing rather than someone else's information. Your data is not visible to other users, and is not pooled or aggregated with anyone else's.

The microphone and voice entry

The microphone is used for one thing: letting you log a transaction by speaking it instead of typing it. It is only ever active while you are actively recording, and recording only ever starts when you tap the microphone button.

When you finish speaking, that recording is sent to Google's Gemini service, which transcribes it and identifies the amount, category, and description. The result comes back to you as a draft for you to review before anything is saved.

Recordings are not kept. While you are speaking, the audio is written to a temporary file on your device — that is how the phone records at all — and that file is deleted as soon as the recording has been sent. It is never saved to the app's database, never uploaded anywhere except to be transcribed, and never readable by anyone else. Google's handling of data sent to its API is governed by Google's privacy policy.

Notifications

The app can send two kinds of notification, both optional and both switchable from the Family screen at any time.

• A daily reminder to log what you have spent. This is scheduled on your phone and never leaves it — no data is sent anywhere to produce it.
• An alert when someone else in your household logs a transaction. To show it on your lock screen, the amount, the category, and the name of the person who logged it are sent through Apple's push notification service, which is the only way any app can deliver a notification to an iPhone. Apple passes it to your device and does not retain it.

Turning household alerts off deletes your device's notification token and stops anything being sent.

Services the app relies on

• Supabase — stores your account and your household's data.
• Cloudflare — hosts the app and handles its network requests.
• Google (Gemini) — transcribes voice recordings, as described above. Used only when you record something.
• Apple — delivers household alerts to your device, as described above. Used only while those alerts are switched on.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account from inside the app, at any time and for any reason: Family → Delete account. No reason needs to be given, there is nobody to ask, and there is no waiting period. Deletion is immediate and permanent.

What goes depends on whether you share your budget with anyone:

• If you are the only person in your budget, the whole thing is deleted with your account — every category, every transaction, and the budget itself. Nothing is kept.
• If other people share your budget, your account, your name and your device's notification token are deleted, and you are removed from the household. The budget itself stays with them, and so do the transactions already logged against it — they are a shared record of that household's spending, and removing them would delete other people's data as well as your own. What is removed is the link between those entries and you: they no longer record who logged them.

If you would rather the shared entries went too, delete them in the app before deleting your account, or ask the others in your household to.

Children

Bare Budget is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that affects what is collected or who it is shared with, the date at the top of this page will change and anyone using the app will be told directly.
