Bare Budget is a household budgeting app. You set a monthly amount for each category, log what you spend as you spend it — by typing or by speaking — and everyone sharing the budget sees the same picture.
It is built and run by one person. If something is broken or confusing, writing to the address at the bottom of this page reaches them directly.
Getting started
- Create an account, then either start a new budget or join an existing one with an invite code.
- Set your amounts. A new budget arrives with a starter set of categories, all at zero. Give each one a monthly figure, or remove the ones you do not need.
- Log as you go. Tap + to type a transaction, or the microphone to say one — "twelve forty at the corner shop for groceries". What comes back is a draft you check before it is saved.
Sharing a budget
On the Family screen, tap Create an invite code and send the code to whoever you want to add. They sign up, enter it, and see the same budget. Each code works once, and expires after fourteen days. You can revoke one at any time before it is used.
Common problems
The confirmation email has not arrived
Check the spam folder first. If it is not there, write to the address below and the account can be confirmed by hand.
The microphone button does nothing
Bare Budget needs microphone permission. If it was refused once, iOS will not ask again — turn it back on in Settings → Bare Budget → Microphone. Voice logging also needs a network connection and at least one category to file the spending under.
Notifications are not arriving
Both switches live on the Family screen. If they are greyed out, iOS notifications are off for the app — the screen offers a link straight to the right page in Settings. Household alerts only tell you about transactions somebody else logged, so they will not fire for your own.
"Can't reach your budget"
This is the network, not your account. You are still signed in; tap Try again once you have a connection.
A category will not delete
Categories with spending against them are archived rather than deleted, so past months keep their history. An archived category is hidden from new entries but still shown, greyed, on the Budget screen.
Deleting your account
Family → Delete account, in the app. It is immediate and permanent, and nobody needs to be asked. If you are the only person in your budget, the budget is deleted with it; if you share it, the budget stays with the others and the entries you logged stop being attributed to you. The privacy policy describes exactly what is removed.
Contact
It is one person answering, so a reply may take a day or two. Saying which screen you were on and what you expected to happen makes it much quicker to sort out.
